Fly Away

from Maybe Man by Jim Beckwith

about

This song was inspired by my trip to Ghana, the imagery, the dualities of life, contrasts of beauty, hardships, trying to make sense of this life, reminders... I like the mesmerizing quality of the asymmetrical metered guitar riff - it felt a bit like some of the guitar or harp sounds I've heard from Africa. One day I'll do an orchestrated version.

lyrics

Fly Away
Jim Beckwith, BMI - ©2009

On the coast of Africa
coconut palms would sway
Streams of sunlight tell the future,
the gems this trip would bring...

Oblivious.
Born, then we die
humans feign intelligence
but birds, they never forget - how to fly...

Such a pivotal time;
can't make much sense.
No real reason for the rhyme;
Don't be so tense...so tense.

We’re sailing a course
on this ship of life
If you want to make a nice photograph
just look for the beautiful light

Fly away, birdy fly
Remember how to soar
It's all here,
Life is an open door

I was there when the baby's father
first he met Nana Ya Ofori Atta
miss that friend like a missing brother
He's the one that brought me to Ghana

We struggle for the money
battle against time
work for some entity
and try to find the line

Baba looked me in the eye and smiled
I was a sad defender
"you’re always looking for a harder struggle," he said
and what you need -- is surrender"

Let it go, let it go

Life can be so beautiful;
why not let it be?
beauty's in the eye -
go ahead, behold, and see.

Fly away, birdy fly
Remember how to soar
It's all available,
Life's an open door
